What are the skills needed in order to fish?

you see i have to do a writing ingment on the book "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Heminway and it's about and old fisherman named Santiago who has to catch a marlin for redemption. In order to do the writing ignment, i have to know what skills are needed in order to fish because i have never gone fishing before in my life.
