Why does the catechism (catholic doctrine) say...?

The Catholic Church absolutely forbids worship of Mary or anyone else other than God. That would constitute idolatry, as plainly stated in the Catechism. Note the term "devotion". What the quote says is that great respect, devotion, for the woman through whom our Lord and Savior came into the world is a natural result of worshipping our Lord and Savior.
