How can one say they are a "Confederate" yet also say they are a proud American?

Uh.. I live in Florida and their are rednecks in my school with confederate flags on their book bag and they arnt racist towards anyone. They are just proud that they are from the south. I think people are being overdramatic about the whole confederate flag thing.. I have one and some of my friends are black and hispanic...
