How aquatic organism maintain water balance in their body?

Most aquatic eukaryotes will have cell membranes which are less permeable to water to allow less water to flow in or out depending on freshwater or saltwater. Protists, such as the Paramecium, have contractile vacuoles which fill up with excess water and then fire it out like a cannonball.
