Does this sound like a good idea?

Not really. If the jar is open then the Betta can still come out and kill the guppies, if it is closed then the Bettan is harder to feed and the water in the jar will quickly become unhealthy for the betta. You need a seperate tank for the betta. Or you can buy dividers at your local fish store and create space in your tank for the betta.
